Some flavours feel made for autumn. Fragrant caraway, gently warming fennel and a generous slice of bread alongside something hot and comforting.
Our Nearly Rye gluten-free sourdough is back for a limited seasonal run, bringing those flavours together in a loaf inspired by classic rye bread.
Whether you’re already a fan or curious to try it, here’s how to make the most of this autumn favourite.
Meet Nearly Rye
Nearly Rye is our gluten-free take on traditional rye bread. Made with a gluten-free sourdough starter and teff flour, it has a soft crumb, a rich flavour and a subtly spiced finish.
Caraway and fennel seeds give it its distinctive aromatic character. Think savoury and fragrant, with a gentle warmth rather than chilli heat.
Handmade to order and baked fresh, it’s available exclusively during the autumn months.
Not sure what to put on it?
If caraway and fennel are new to you, start simply. A warm slice with your favourite butter lets you get to know the flavour, while creamy, tangy or sweet toppings offer delicious ways to balance it.
Here are five combinations to try.
1. Warm toast with butter
Sometimes the simplest option is the best place to start. Toast a slice until the edges are golden, then spread generously with butter or a plant-based alternative.
Enjoy alongside your morning tea or as an afternoon snack.
2. Cream cheese, cucumber and black pepper
Spread with cream cheese or a plant-based alternative, add thinly sliced cucumber and finish with cracked black pepper.
The cool cucumber and creamy topping balance the aromatic seeds beautifully. Add a squeeze of lemon if you like a little tang.
3. Cheese and apple
Pair toasted Nearly Rye with mature cheddar or your favourite plant-based cheese, then add thin slices of crisp apple.
The apple brings sweetness and crunch to the savoury loaf. For something warmer, melt the cheese on top and serve the apple alongside.
4. Hummus and roasted vegetables
Spread a generous layer of hummus onto warm toast, then top with roasted carrots or peppers.
Finish with a squeeze of lemon and a handful of rocket for an easy autumn lunch with plenty of colour and flavour.
5. A generous slice with soup
Serve Nearly Rye warm alongside tomato soup, lentil soup or a chunky vegetable stew. Butter it, dunk it or use it to scoop up the last delicious spoonful. An easy way to turn a bowl of soup into a cosy lunch.
